WISE WORDS FROM MOTHER SUPERIOR

Have you wondered why thread gets thinner as the weight or thread size numbergets larger? It is confusing but there is a reason behind this system. Here isa simple analogy to illustrate why: The goal is to determine how much thread it takes to weigh one pound.

Thread A takes 20 miles to weigh a pound so it is labeled as 20 wt.
Thread B takes 40 miles to weight a pound and is labeled 40 wt. It is a finerthread because it takes 40 miles to weigh one pound.
Thread C takes 60 miles to weigh a pound so it is even finer yet.

Perfect Fit Jeans w/ Rae Cumbie

What wonderful sewing weekend! Seven ladies and I enjoyed a weekend of sewing with Rae Cumbie, Threads Magazine and Sew News magazine author.

The August/September 2010 issue of Sew News Magazine featured an article by Rae called DIY Jeans. In both the class and article Rae discusses, selecting the right denim, zipper selection, keeping a jeans journal, perfecting fit, faux fly zipper construction and the order of constructing your jeans. So you may be thinking, why take the class. Well most sewers are trying to perfect fit. It was beneficial to have Rae assist in helping us acheive the perfect fitting jeans. Rae has been fitting and constructing bridal gowns and custom clothing for over 20 years. She knows what good fit looks like.

Over the two days, we all completed several mockups. The mockups were needed to assess to our fit issues. Once Rae assessed the issues, she pinned the changes that would need to be transferred to the pattern. It is impossible to perfect fit in one mockup. The ladies and I then made another mockup to reflect these changes. All of us had to do a second and sometimes third mockup. The ladies were quite pleased with the skills they learned and to finally having a pair of well fitting jeans.

Pants for Real People!

Today I finally picked up my skirt and pant patterns custom fitted for me by Sarah Veblen. I emailed Sarah last week to see when I could pickup my pant and skirt sloper. Sarah is working on a book about fit. She asked me last October if I would be willing to be fitted and photographed for the book. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity. Mostly, because I can't find ready to wear pants the fit. I've got some " junk in my trunk." LMBO....I wish! Plus, I didn't have to find a fit buddy and make several muslins to get the perfect fit. She did it for me. Thanks, Sarah! THE BIG BONUS.......now I have a pant and skirt pattern sloper that I can use compare to commercial patterns. Hallelujah!

The process was quite interesting and I learned a lot. I met with Sarah for several fittings. Her daughter photographed several images documenting HBL and pattern changes that were needed prior to the next fitting. I think we did those fittings and images at least four times for about 2.5 hours each session. I think you will get to see the before and after shots of the pattern changes needed in her book. After Sarah perfected the fit, we met with a professional photographer for the book images. Sarah has scheduled another day for images with the photographer.

I learned from watching Sarah, the importance of documenting the fitting process using photography. I learned how to remove that excess fabric that is always in the front on my pants. Whenever I try on ready to wear pants or make pants. See how much shorter the crotch seam is on the front pattern piece, compared to the back. I learned how much my body had changed from my younger days. Those were the days! My pelvis tilts forward, notice the back pattern waist line tilt. Who Knew! All the front darts were moved and my back darts aren't the same length.

Now I need to copy the pant and skirt sloper to tag board to preserve the pattern sloper so that I can make various pant and skirt styles.

What to Blog About?

I must admit, I've not had the time to blog. I'm so busy teaching sewing, responding to emails and voice mail, advertising classes, searching for instructors, doing paperwork and more. I've been pondering for several months about committing to updating my blog and what to write about. I've perused many sewing blogs and frankly, I don't want to read another tutorial or detailed description of how a garment was constructed.

So that's the question of the year.....How can I make my blog interesting, but not a sewing lesson. I was discussing this with one of my students today and she suggested that I blog about my students. I was already thinking of that! :) I could blog about how they learn, their fears with grading and trimming seams, their completed projects and more. In other words, the real life stuff that happens when you learn to sew.

So of course I was thinking would my students want or appreciate me blogging about them. So next week before we break for Christmas I will ask permission to include their stories in my blog. No full names will be disclosed. If they all agree, that's what I'll blog about in 2010 in addition to my sewing adventures.

Iphone Sewing Applications

I use my IPhone for everything. It contains The Sassy SEWer's calendar, my personal calendar, contact list and I can receive emails too. I luv, luv luv technology. It keeps me organized. Now I can add a fabric yardage conversion app called Yardage Calc. Guleno Consulting, Inc. offers an application that will replace the yardage conversion chart found in the back of the Simplicity pattern book.

When I teach You Can Make Sewing Series - Level 1 class. My students receive a copy of a yardage calculator and I discuss how to use it . There is so much information to remember in
Level 1. I don't have enough fingers to count the number of times students don't get the correct yardage for their garments when the fabric isn't 45 or 60 inches wide. Often times, they forget the worksheet. That's one of the reasons, we take a field trip to the fabric store. My goal is to have each student confident about shopping at the fabric store.

That aside, I purchased the app. I will use it when my students leave their yardage conversion worksheet home. I will use it to convert yardage for client projects, both apparel and home decorating. I will use it when a friend and I are fabric shopping and she/he needs to convert yardage.

Guleno Consulting, Inc. also offers Fabric Calc for sewing industry professionals, such as designers and manufacturers . With their Fabric Calc app you can:

Calculate the yardage needed when purchasing fabric of different widths
Compare fabric pricing to see the better buy
Calculate varying fabric widths for allocation
Convert yards to meters
Convert meters to yards

If you are a dressmaker, seamstress, fashion designer or a home sewer. I highly recommend any one of these apps. It's one less, thing you have to remember.

She's Learning to Sew at Age Six!

These "kids Can Sew and Fashion Design". Some a mere 6 yrs. old and learning to sew.....on a sewing machine! They rock.

Research says it takes 10,000 hours to master anything. These girls are on their way. Does anyone know how old they would be if started to learn to sew at 6 yrs. old? Each student learning to sew for one hour, each week. I calculated 16 yrs old. Don't hold me to it. Math's not my best subject. :) That means they would be considered an advanced seamster @ age 16. Awesome!!!

Wish I would have began sewing when i was 6 yrs. old. I'm happy the girls have the opportunity to try sewing. But you know what's even better, Teaching them to sew and seeing the look in their eye when they, get it. They love it and so do I. I love my job!

Sew Little Time for Me!

I’ve been thinking about how little sewing I did for myself during 2009. I’m not one to make New Years Resolutions, but this year I resolve to sew more for me. I schedule time for everybody and everything else, but don’t schedule time to sew. I need to sew more for me. Sewing makes me happy and reduces my stress levels.

To help me facilitate my sewing goals for 2010, I did some research. There is a plethora of time management and goal setting books and websites available to help me sew more. I found a great article on the internet about goal setting called “Setting SMART Goals”, by Annette Richmond which describes the concept superbly. I have taken excerpts from her article and adapted it to sewing. I hope that using these steps will help me reach my goals.

A better way to track your progress

What is your vision of success? The image is different for each of us. For one person it's to sew more, for another it's attending the 2010 ASG Conference in Atlanta. But, whatever your dream, setting SMART goals will help you make it come true. Setting goals is more than making vague statements like, "I will find a new job" or "I will increase my business." It means creating a written plan that includes reasonable and measurable long-term and short-term objectives. It means setting SMART goals. Lots of coaches and consultants use the SMART acronym to explain goal setting. Each one uses a slightly different set of criteria. In this case, S.M.A.R.T. refers to goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.

What makes a good goal?

Traditional goal-setting wisdom has taught us that a good goal must be SMART

a) Specific - Goals need to be something specific. Often we set goals that are so loose, it's nearly impossible to judge whether we hit them or not. For example, a statement like "I will sew more" is too vague. How will you know if and when you've reached your goal? Saying, “I will sew one item each month" is more specific.

b) Measurable - Goals need to be measurable. For example, many of us want to sew with a plan. But, "sewing with a plan" is an ambiguous statement. A clearer objective is "I will sew items that compliment my existing wardrobe." It's a simple, concrete goal. This makes it easy to see if you hit your target.

c) Achievable - Goals need to be reasonable and achievable. Finishing a queen sized quilt in two weeks is unrealistic (unless you're planning to sew for eight hours every day). Finishing a queen sized quilt 2 months is reasonable. Don't set yourself up for failure by setting goals that are out of reach.

d) Realistic - Goals need to be realistic. When we're kids we think we can do anything. As adults we learn that while we can have a lot, we can't have it all at the same time. It's important to honestly evaluate yourself. Do you have the ability and commitment to make your dream come true? Or does it need a little adjustment? For example, you may love to sew, but do you have the time, talent and commitment? Be honest.

e) Timely - Goals need to have a time frame. Having a set amount of time will give your goals structure. For example, many of us want to enter our project in the State or County Fair. Some people spend a lot of time talking about what they want to do, someday. But, without an end date there is no sense of urgency, no reason to take any action today. Having a specific time frame gives you the impetus to get started. It also helps you monitor your progress.

This year I’ll call my sewing resolutions, sewing goals. Here is my short list of sewing goals for 2010.

1) sew for me at least twice a week

2) sew with a plan…that means to sew garments that coordinate with my existing wardrobe that are both flattering in color and style

3) decrease my fabric stash

4) improve my garment fitting

5) continue my formal sewing education

Christian Siriano @ The Corcoran

I haven't seen a person like Christian Siriano for a while. He reminds me of my gay and flamboyant friend Troy, who had great personal style. Both, true Divas. Siriano, reminds me of myself, funny, fearless and passionate about our work. I just luv, luv, luv him he is FIERCE. Victoria Beckham, thinks he's "breath of fresh air" I agree!

Two friends and I met Siriano at a book signing for his new book FIERCE Style. The signing was held at the Corcoran Museum in Washington, DC. I found out about the signing from Laura,co-founder of DC Threads. Thanks, Laura for turning me on to this event.

Most Marylanders claim Siriano as, our own. We are so proud of him and his bringing a the spot light to Annapolis and especially, Baltimore. Most people associate Baltimore with "The Wire". As a native Baltimore resident, I must tell you that there is more to Baltimore, than what you see on "The Wire.

Siriano was funny and entertaining. He began with a story about about Tim Gunn's initial disdain for him. Funny! He went on to tell his adventures playing dress up as a kid. That's how he became interested in fashion. He shared stories about his two hour daily trips to the Baltimore School for the Arts and various other personal stories.

The evening concluded with questions from the audience. There were questions about the state of fashion in DC and Annapolis. He even made some remarks about the fashion in the room. After the question and answer period, he autographed our books and took photos with us. Of, course I got mine book signed and a photo graph. Thanks Janine for joining me. Thanks Tee, for getting a book for a sista!

Hand Beading Class

On Thursday, three sewing friends and I headed to the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo in Chantilly, VA. The expo was had old and new vendors. To name a few, Vogue Fabrics was a vendor again this year. I didn't visit their booth, because I honestly don't need another piece of fabric. Hope Yoder, Hancock Fabrics and Marathon Thread each were vendors again this year. Some newbies that caught my eye, were J.Stern Designs, Gail Patrice Design and Londa's Creative Thread. I'm hoping to have each of them teach at the Sassy SEWer.

I registered to take a hand beading class with June Colburn. I've been wanting to hand bead for quite some time. I luv, luv, luv the richness hand beading adds to any garment, mini quilt or accessory. Each student purchased a supply kit that included a hand beading handout, a package of beads, a beading needle, silk screened fabric, and a felt square.

June taught us beading techniques such as, traveling, back stitching (a classic hand sewing stitch), couching and more. It was so interesting to see how each class participants design differed, but were all beautiful. June then showed us some of her most intricate work. One piece she showed the class, she says took her one hundred hours, yes 100 hours, to complete. It was fabulous. Overall, the class was enjoyable, June was patient and knowledgeable and I learned a lot.

On August 23, 2009 The Sassy SEWer and ASG sponsored a second free sewing event to benefit Puppy Mill Rescue. Fifteen seamsters and non-seamsters attended the event. The volunteers came from as far as Fredericksburg, Virginia, Cecil County, Harford County, Baltimore County, as well as, Baltimore City. A few volunteers are members of American Sewing Guild. Of course, Mikail was our spokesmodel.

It was especially nice to have Sarah attend, she had never sewn before. With my help, she designed and constructed a harness. Sarah designed the harness with the yellow flower. Sarah, now know how to use a sewing machine. Great job, Sarah!

A special thanks to all those who attended the free sewing event for PuppyMillRescue. Twenty-four dog harnesses were completed and ready for sale. We had a great time sewing for a worthy cause.

The Sassy SEWer is now offering Kids Can Sew & Fashion Design classes for kids ages 6 - 12 years old. Kids Can Sew® Sewing Program started in the 80's and is the original program for teaching kids to sew. All other programs came as a result of ours, but none can duplicate the simplicity and ease of use that our program offers.

The Kids Can Sew® & Fashion Design curriculum - pattern packets consist of kids sewing patterns that area easy to follow patterns, instructions and directions organized into Student Pattern Packets. These Student Pattern Packets contain a workbook of sewing instructions with full sized and multi sized clothing patterns. In addition we also offer kids Sewing Camps year round. While the main part of our curriculum is geared toward younger children (girls & boys), we offer a line of teens, and adults pattern packets as well.

What is the Kids Can Sew® & Fashion Design Curriculum?
The Kids Can Sew® & Fashion Design curriculum - pattern packets consist of kids sewing patterns that area easy to follow patterns, instructions and directions organized into Student Pattern Packets. These Student Pattern Packets contain a workbook of sewing instructions with full sized and multi sized clothing patterns. In addition we also offer kids Sewing Camps year round. How many Student Pattern Packets are there?
Shown in the slideshow above is a sample of the Student 1st Year Packet however we currently have TWELVE Student Pattern Packets in the program consisting of different skill levels designed to help advancing students learn and progress through the program. Because of our unmatched range of projects students can stay enrolled for years learning the correct sewing methods. The average student will stay enrolled for three to four years.

How many projects does each Student Pattern Packet have?
It varies with each Student Pattern Packet. However, students use each packet for approximately 12 months. For example, the first year pattern packet contains enough projects to keep a child sewing for more than 50 one hour lessons making a complete wardrobe of adorable fun and easy to sew projects.

Does Kids Can Sew® offer Sewing Camps?
Yes, Most Kids Can Sew® teachers offer sewing camps for their students as well. The Camp Collections student packets provide an excellent sewing program for the Kids Can Sew® camps and many teachers run camps year round.

2010 American Sewing Guild Community Service Project

American Sewing Guild(ASG) does an annual community service project. For 2008 the community service project benefited women with Breast Cancer. ASG made anti-ouch pouches. The Anti-Ouch Pouch is a pillow that hangs from the shoulder, fitting snugly under the arm to cushion the area after breast surgery or during radiation treatment. surgery.The wedge shape gently holds the arm away from the body when the user is standing. The strap holds the pillow in place without having to use sore arm muscles to “clutch” it.The strap is adjustable and the fiberfill may be adjusted via the overlapped opening.

For 2009 the project was pillowcases for children at Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House provides housing for the sick kids and their families. Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. The treatment may last a day, a month, or even longer. It's a long time to be away from home, or to divide a family. Ronald McDonald Houses around the world offer families a way to stay together, in proximity to the treatment hospital, and be comfortable and cared for during their stay. During Sewing Awareness month (September) The Maryland Chapter of ASG will donate their pillowcases to Ronald McDonald House - Baltimore and Washington, DC

For 2010 the ASG community service project will be drawstring bags for our troops. The bags will be filled with 1 gallon zip lock bags. The troops can use the bags for personal use, and some pass them on to the children of IRAQ. September is Sewing Awareness Month and ASG and the Sassy SEWer will sponsor free sewing lessons to make these bags for our troops. Stay tuned for the dates.

Intro to Fashion Illustration

Thursday was the 3rd session of Intro to Fashion Illustration. That Thursday, we would all get what we've been anxiously waiting for......to sketch clothing. Our first assignment would be to sketch a green blouse. Our instructor, Allyn demonstrated sketching the blouse. We followed with our interpretation. The class was in awe. All our sketches were different in style, yet each could be easily identified as the green blouse. The instructor assured us that each person is expected to have their own style. We were ecstatic that we were able to do this.

Next assignment would be to sketch a floral print that was draped by me. Sketching the floral print seemed as if, it would have it owns challenges. After all, most of the class had never sketched until this class. Inspite of that, we again rose to the challenge. The instructor was pleased with our sketches.

Tonight's class was the best class so far. Can't wait until next week.

I found a great article about kids and sewing. I often hear my nieces say they are bored. Sounding like my parent's, my response was "bored, how can you be bored when there's three of you." LOL!!! When I was a kid, I was never bored. We kids were always outside playing or at the pool. At the time, I was not sewing. We kids played games,such as blocks, dodge ball, jumped rope, swimming and rode our bikes. There were no video games until the 80's and even then we preferred to be outside during the summer.

I found this video on you tube. It made me think of my Mom, my Aunt, and my sewing friends. My Mom and Aunt were the first persons I ever saw sewing. My mom used to make my niece and I matching dresses. We hated it. LOL

My Aunt is an expert tailor. When she visited from Connecticut with my newphews. She raised two of them. They would have the fliest suits and over coats on. I always wished she lived closer.

My many sewing friends, both old and new. Sewing would be so boring without you. I need you give me advice on fabric selection, inspiration and just to sit and sew.

To all those ladies and gents, who have supported my sewing endeavors. This is for you.

Baltimore Fashion Week Press Party

Last night I attended Baltimore Fashion Week's (BFW) Press Party. BFW was founded by Sharan Nixon. I met Sharan at a Board of Director's meeting for Baltimore City Community College. I am on the Board. At the meeting Sharan conveyed her vision for BFW and Baltimore designers. Sharan's vision is to have the fashion community think of Baltimore, like we think of New York and Paris for fashion.

The press party was held at the Museum of Industry. The museum was a perfect venue for the event. Baltimore was once known for impeccable men's apparel. Baltimore was a leader in manufacturing men's suits.

BFW and McDonald's partnered to offer a design contest. The winner would be announced at the press party. The five finalist and their design sketches were displayed. The five finalist submitted some fab design sketches. The winner would receive $500 plus money to create their winning design. Baltimore Fashion Week is August 10th - 14th. The winning designer's garment will be on the Runway, August 1oth.

Wow, was I bummed out that day. Why? I made a committment to attend an ASG board meeting the same day and also had tickets to BCCC's fashion show. So I convinced myself that I could do both. A new friend and I drove to some far away county of MD for the board meeting. I'm talking, 1 hour.......1.5 hour drive, each way. I even got the President's permission to present my report early.

Well let me say, by the time I got to BCCC's fashion show. The finale had started. I wasn't happy and neither was my new friend. Nevertheless, I got over it.

Earlier this week I received this video clip from BCCC's Program Director, Sally DiMarco. This email provided lots of inspiration for the week. First, I would be able to see what I missed, Yippie!!!! Secondly, the show was condensed into an 8 minute video. Oh, how I love technology!!! Third, it highlights the talents of the students, instructors, BCCC Fashion Design Program and Sally's leadership.

It is my goal to bring these types of classes in a condensed version, for beginner to advanced sewers. In July the Sassy SEWer is offering Intro to Fashion Illustration and an alterations class called, "Be Your Own Tailor - Pant Hemming. This class will teach you how to professionally shorten various pant types.

My rantings about group/private sewing lessons

During my morning coffee and internet search, I came across a great article that reinforces my rantings about learning to sew. Everyone who knows me, know I love the internet and sewing. They also know that I teach sewing and an advocate for group/private sewing lessons.

As a self taught sewer, I made so many mistakes when I first learned to sew. I tell the story of my first sewing disaster. I was making my first skirt and cut out the pattern pieces wrong. Therefore, my skirt would not go together, the notches wouldn't match. I couldn't figure that why. My next step was to get advice from an expert, Aunt Bernice. Within, minutes so showed me what I did wrong. Dah!!!!!

Some people say that making mistakes is how you learn. Yes, I agree, but why make it harder. My philosophy is to work smarter, not harder. I would have loved to have someone teach me to sew when I started.

Don't get me wrong, the internet has so many websites, U-tube tutorials and blogs about sewing that are fabulous. As an experienced sewer, I can easily understand sewing terminology and what's being taught. For a beginner, I believe this would be a bit difficult, not knowing sewing terminology. My friend Jane and I organized a free charity sewing event on June 28th. Volunteers sewed dog harnesses for dogs rescued from puppy mills. The inhuman conditions that dogs live in at puppy mills was exposed on the Oprah Show.

Yesterday, 13 lovely ladies visited the Sassy SEWer- A Sewing & Craft Lounge to sew for the puppies that are rescued. The harnesses are used to raise funds for Puppy Mill Rescue. The funds raised pay for the medications, surgeries and care these dogs need. Fabric was donated by Maryland Chapter of American Sewing Guild, the Sassy Sewer hosted the event and refreshments were provided by Puppy Mill Rescue

For three hours we laughed, sewed and snacked. Ruthie a representative from Puppy Mill Rescue discussed how her organization worked, why she became involved and how we can help save these animals. Ruthie brought her poodle that was rescued from the mill. He was so cute!!! There was another women who had rescued two had adopted two pups. Another who was a breeder, who explained why we should buy from reputable breeders. Both passionate about helping these poor dogs.

Each of us can do something to help these animals. My lifestyle is not conducive to animals(I like to travel, sew and socialize to much, LOL!!), so my contribution was to host and provide the sewing machines and sewing tools to help these unfortunate animals.

We all can make a difference!!

Another Adventure in Making Prom Dresses 2009

This year I altered two and made two prom dresses. Some people may have heard me say how much I hate to sew for others. It's not that I'm being selfish. I'm just a little bit of a perfectionist and some people don't appreciate the art of sewing. Most people don't know how much work goes into making a custom made to fit garment. Furthermore, they don't want to pay.

Well, this year's dresses were a pleasure to alter and make. All the girls were a pleasure to work with and looked fabulous in their garments. Ashley came to me four weeks before her prom with a photo of a gown she saw on the internet.

At first I hesitated because of the short notice. I usually ask for 6 -8 weeks, because of fittings and unexpected issues. I agreed because she was my friend from high school's niece and was so sweet. It was my job to create the identical garment in the fabric of her choice. Since, I didn't have enough time to draft a pattern, I found Simplicity Pattern #4401 with similar design lines.

First I made several muslins to perfect the fit. Which means she had to come in for several fittings and to be sure that her design was what she envisioned. Ashley was a bit anxious, because she was not familiar with the process of creating a custom made garment. I believe there were times that she was scared that she would not have the dress before her prom. I assured her that I would not sleep until her dress was done.

In the end, she was happy and looked beautiful. I was happy that she saw her dream dress realized.

I'm a true Project Runway fan. Yesterday while working on the last prom dress. I was able to see episodes 1 thru 3 of Bravo TVs, the Fashion Show. At first I was a bit cynical. Thinking they can't compare to PR. It's Bravo's attempt to replace Project Runway, which will air on Lifetime in August. The host are Issac Mizrahi and Kelly Rowland (Destiny's Child). The Fashion Show differs from PR in that their are buyers and judges critiquing the designers. I like the fact their are people critiquing, who select the clothes that stores will sell to the public.

Even more exciting is that the public can buy the winning designer's creation. How HOT is that. So, I visited Bravo TV to see what the winning designs cost. I was shocked at the $199 price. A good deal for a mass produced garment in today's economy. If it, were to remain a one of a kind, custom design I suspect the price would be between $500 - $1000.

Episode 4 was hot last night. The challenge was to select any shoe from Bergdorf's and design a outfit for the shoe. I was so into this one, because I often buy a shoe without having a outfit to wear with. Well, let me say that all the designers rose to the challenge. I agreed with the judges of the best three designs. Reco a designer from Tennessee won this challenge. His can design and sew really fast like Christopher from PR and is confident about his skill level. The other two designers, Angel and Daniella designed some awesome dresses.

I'll continue to watch the show. I needed something fashion related to watch on TV until PR returns. Check it out, I think you'll like it.

I was so happy to learn that Isaac Mizrahi is the chief designer for Liz Claiborne. There is a Liz Claiborne store at Arundel Mills Mall. The current line of close are horrific, stuff my grandmother would wear. My friend and I visited the Hagerstown store a few weeks ago. I immediately started quizzing the ladies for the date his designs would be in the store...Mid March they said. I have yet to get back to the store.

In the meantime, I visited the Liz Claiborne website today. Isaac did not disappoint. The color palette is great, mostly Navy. I luv navy, it's my black. His designs appeal to me because of the modern classic styles. I would luv the following looks:

I am a board member of the Baltimore Chapter - Association of Sewing & Design Professionals (ASDP), formerly Professional Association of Custom Clothier (PACC). I wanted to blog about how much I appreciate this exceptional group of women. I joined the Baltimore Chapter in 2007. I'm loving it. The group consists of some talented ladies. Often, I'm in awe at how good they are at the business of sewing. They are smart, creative, funny, inspiring, encouraging and mentors. I learn so much from them all. I'm humble and grateful to be a member of ASDP.

To give you an idea of how talented these ladies are. Some have won the Threads Challenge. Most have entered a garment into Threads Challenge. Impressive from my viewpoint. These ladies are just darn good at their sewing skills. Other members whose name you may recognize: Sarah Veblen, Rae Cumbie and Susan Khalje. All are regular contributors to Threads Magazine, operate successful sewing businesses and are skilled at sewing.

Each month I'm happy to see my fellow board members and all the ladies that share my love for sewing. Most of all, I'm happy to see my new sewing friends. We talk the same sewing language..... armscye, HBL, sloper. This month two members did presentations. Debby Spencer demonstrated how to draft sleeves and cuffs. Cheryl Evans discussed and demonstrated Fashion Illustration. The wealth of knowledge is this group is amazing.

I Need Project Runway

Well it's been a while since I've blogged. I envy those who find the time to blog regularly. As a business owner, I can't seem to find the time between teaching, sewing samples and paperwork. Well, I found some time because, I need Project Runway now. I'm so missing it. Currently, there is a dispute between Lifetime and Bravo networks because PR was slated to move to Lifetime. Season 6 has been taped but there is no scheduled air time.

In the meantime, in between time, I'm enjoying watching Project Runway Canada on You Tube. I am watching the 1st season. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Iman was the host. I luv Iman, she is so beautiful and classy. PR Canada differs from PR USA in that there is less bickering amongst the designers. The challenges in some cases are different, thank goodness. My favorite designer for PR Canada, season 1 is Bidell. He's fly. Check it out. I hope PR USA starts soon.

Fashion Illustrated for Michelle Obama

Seeing sketches that international designers sketched for Michelle Obama to wear to the inauguration, did my heart good. Currently, I'm taking a fashion illustration class (15 wks) at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC). It has been fun, stimulating, exciting and stressful at times, but overall great. During the class, there were times I thought I would never be able to sketch the human figure. I was reminded by my instructor that my sketches were fine for a beginner. LOL

A member of Association of Sewing & Design Professionals recommended the class. She was adamant that she could only sketch stick figures prior to enrolling in the class. Her sketches looked professional to me. I can now take the skills learned in my class and sketch designs in my head or design details I may see on clothing. Furthermore, I can illustrate the designs clients have in their heads. This class would be invaluable to those who sew for others.

From 12 - Feb 16, 2009 (6 wks) Fashion Illustration Basics with Allyn Harris will be offered at the lounge. Fashion Illustration Basics will be offered from 6-9pm weekly. Allyn Harris' career as an artist and teacher has touched the lives of countless students, and a broad segment of the general public.. Over the years, introductory and advanced classes in fashion design, color, and presentations of the human figure, have constituted a major component of his training to students at The Baltimore City Community College, G-Street Fabrics, and Syracuse University. Many of his students have since pursued careers implementing their acquired skills. Beyond the classroom, one man shows at such venues as The Baltimore Museum Of Art, and Hood college, in addition to the display of award-winning works in numerous group exhibitions in museums and galleries in Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia, have further enhanced his outreach to the public.

Academically, Allyn Harris' personal background includes a Bachelor's Degree from the Maryland Institute College Of Art and Johns Hopkins University, followed by a Masters Degree awarded by Syracuse University. Postgraduate studies were pursued at American University and George Washington University in Washington D.C., and The Maryland Institute College Of Art in Baltimore.

Michelle Obama: What Should She Wear

For years I have been reading books written by Sandra Betzina. I'm more surprised at how many seasoned sewist are not aware of who she is. Sandra is a national sewing educator. She has been sewing for over 40 years. Sandra is one of many sewing instructors who are experts in fitting garment patterns.

Many sewist abandon garment sewing for quilting because they are frustrated by fit. The pattern manufacturers (McCall, Vogue, Butterick, Simplicity etal) have made it easier by producing multi-sized patterns. No of us is the size of a size 2 model or the dress form. I for one am one size in the bodice and another at the waist and hips. Multi sized patterns help to solve this.

The proper fitting tools and knowledge make pattern fitting so easy. Sandra Betzina is the best in my opinion at teaching pattern fitting. She will be visiting the Sassy Sewer on Tuesday, 9/16/08 for all full day lecture and hands on workshop to show you how to get a better fit. You won't want to miss this. Northeast Reporter Interview

As a semifinalist for Idea Cafe's I was interviewed by a local community newspaper, called the Northeast Reporter. I've never been interviewed for anything. The interview was fairly painless. I was just being myself.

However, the photo was another thing. What they say is correct, photos and TV does make you look overweight. LOL !!!!! Today I must begin to exercise and eat right. That photo was surely a motivator.

Fashion Sewing Careers

At the Int'l Textile Show in Las Vegas I met two young sewing entreprenuers, Allyce King & Melissa Watson. These ladies were inspiring young sewers and entreprenuers. With help, they took the initiative to pursue a career in fashion. Careers in fashion are not limited to fashion design. Young people could be textile designers, fabric store owner, buyer, fashion illustrator, pattern designer, fashion author, custom dressmaker, sewing instructor and much more. There are many sewing related careers for young people.

Best Patterns of 2007

Pattern Review has published their list of the best patterns of 2007. There were quite a few patterns I loved. I especially liked Vogue 8386 and 8387, wrap dresses are flattering on most body types. I taught Simplicity 3893 at Joann Fabrics this past summer. I don't know why there were no takers on that one. Simplicity 3631 was featured in Sew Stylish Magazine and is a pattern that was selected by ASG for their 2008 Creativity contest. Amy Butler's -Frenchy Bag is adorable. Did you know she has a great selection of fabrics. Lastly, McCalls 5330 - pencil skirt is adorable.

The Sassy Sewer - Grand Opening

Learn to Sew with "You Can Make It" Sewing Series

The Keys to My Future & 2nd Career

On Thanksgiving Eve I called the building owner, in hopes that he would be there so that I could deliver chairs. When he answered, he indicated that he was going to call me that day to deliver the keys. That meant the Lounge was ready. Yeah!!!!!!

I was so excited to finally receive the keys to the Lounge. The carpet had been installed and the yellow walls look fantastic ( Thanks Joyce and Earline - their favorite color, now one of mine) . Yellow just makes you want ot sew. What do you think? Please comment.Pics below

Class Interest Survey

I also envision beginning to advanced knitting, crochet and jewelry classes.

The Color Yellow

Over the weekend, I checked on the status of the renovations at the the lounge. Walls and doors have been removed and added. The paint color has been chosen- a beautiful bright yellow. Did you know that yellow denotes, happiness, joy, optimism and hope. I choose yellow because it's my sister and sewing friend's favorite color. I never much paid attention to yellow until I began to notice that it was the favorite color of many acquaintances. Now I can't help but think of few of my favorite things that are yellow - the sun, flowers and lemons.

Now I must decide on a color complement. Choosing the next color won't be easy. Any suggestions?

Sewing Lounges are popping up across the country to allow sewers of all ages and experiences the chance to learn the tricks of the trade. Project Runway is constantly credited as an inspiration to all aspiring designers to go out there and make their own clothing, but sewing isn’t an instinct. Instead it takes time and diligence and in many cases, formal and informal teaching. A sewing lounge is a destination for seamsters to rally as well as rent equipment and a space to work on anything they can imagine! These lounges offer classes, but even better, they offer support. Recently, I went on a search to find as many sewing lounges as possible scattered across the country.

Lounges aren’t just a school for seamsters, they’re a hip, happening social scene. They’re also the perfect way to meet new people, and get your feet wet without putting in an investment, and keep sewing equipment from filling your homes. Different lounges attract different audiences but they all share the same goal: to make sewing more accessible, let seamsters work with one another, and pass on the skills to the next generation of fashionistas.

Here’s a list of must-know lounges. In this DIY age expect to see more and more lounges popping up—hopefully near you. And if a sewing lounge doesn’t take root near you, you can always consider starting your own!

The Stitch and Bitch Café is an online forum allowing users to communicate via a message board. Also, in the age of the internet, SFSE offers online videos. Fashionistas-in-training. Sew Be It is all about helping you advance your skills. With a focus on learning and guiding, Sew Be It considers themselves gurus in the fashion world. Making the matrix. Many people jump into sewing expecting to whip up an outfit to wear later that week or even that night but the sewing gods don’t always cooperate. First Samples helps you navigate the sewing speed bumps. Fabrics and fun, fun, fun. A fabric store different from any other, Stitches shies away from chain store offerings. Following the three F’s (fresh, fabulous, and fashion), their fabric is always in style. And on Sundays, all are invited to work on projects together from 3 p.m.- 6 p.m. This is why I love sewing lounges. Which Bobbin Fits My Machine

I often get the question, "How do you know what size bobbin to purchase for my machine." My response has been to purchase the bobbin from the manufacturer of your sewing machine. If you 've taken Sewing 1 with me. We've seen various sizes and brands of bobbins in Joann Fabrics.

Well a little internet surfing brought me to Prym/Dritz. Dritz did a wonderful job explaining the difference in a class 15 vs. 66 bobbin. Now the mystery is solved.

American Sewing Guild Conference, Sacramento, CA

I've finally stopped reveling about my first ASG Convention. I traveled to Sacramento California during July for business and pleasure. The first two days were spent being trained by the Home Sewing Association (HSA) to be a trained sewing educator. The next five days were spent attending several workshops on sewing techniques, getting inspiration, eating, laughing and enjoying the company of fellow sewist.

The conference included two fashion shows. The first displaying the garment creations of fellow sewist. The other displaying sewist participating in the ASG Creativity Contest. The sewist created garments using specific patterns chosen by ASG. The winners won cash and prizes any sewer would love.

There was two special dinners. The first included a program by EllenAnne Geisel the author of The Apron Book . The second dinner event was a Gala honoring Joyce Drexler of Sulky and her husband.

For the guest of the conference attendees, tours of Sacramento, San Francisco and Napa Valley were arranged. And the best of all for the attendees a tour to Britex Fabrics and Stone Mountain & Daughter Fabrics was the icing on the cake. I saw fabric(pics to be shown later)and lost my mind.

Attending the ASG convention was probable the most sewing fun I've ever had. I'd do it again and again!
